Since opening in 2001, Julie Baker Fine Art has focused on exhibiting the work of emerging artists from across the country with a growing emphasis on artists from California. The gallery's mission is to expand the audience for contemporary art by presenting work outside of the mainstream in a non-intimidating, educational atmosphere while competing on the international level by participating in quality art fairs and working in collaboration with galleries and museums. The gallery primarily focuses on identifying and exhibiting artists who present a contemporary vision to the traditional art forms of painting, drawing and sculpture through a unique approach to process, medium and imagery. Works are exhibited in a charming and elegant space just outside of historic downtown Nevada City. For driving directions to our new location, click here.
The gallery has accomplished many of its strategic goals. Among these are presenting critically acclaimed exhibitions, participating in fairs in San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York, collaborating on exhibiting artists work with gallerists such as Sara Meltzer, Anthony Meier, David Lusk, Paul Kopeiken, Susan Gescheidle and Cheryl Haines and museums in Oakland, Sacramento and Sonoma, California. In 2003, the gallery was voted best gallery in Northern California by Sacramento based television station KVIE. Additionally, in 2003 the gallery was invited as the only commercial venture to join the Northern California Contemporary Art Consortium, a group of leading art venues such as the Headlands Center for the Arts, Yerba Buena Center, Berkeley Art Museum, Di Rosa Preserve and the San Jose Contemporary Art Institute, to build public awareness of contemporary art in Northern California.
Location
Like Woodstock, Aspen & Santa Fe, Nevada City has always attracted a creative community, seeking haven in the abundant natural beauty. At the foothills of the Sierras, this charmed Gold Country town and it's sister, Grass Valley, has long been home to luminaries and mavericks, famed for bluegrass festivals and Zen poets, a high country retreat from San Francisco and Los Angeles. Julie Baker Fine Art adds a venue for the bounty of artistic talent as an important part of the international contemporary art market. The gallery offers a strong mix of media, style and geography.
